Another American Latino Music talent has succumbed to the draw of the creative community in Los Angeles, the TV and recording star Leyo. Born Leonardo Mendez ln Orange County California, Leyo, as he was affectionately called, first realized he could sing when a lady at church said he had an amazing voice and should join the choir. He did and the rest is history.
Leyo’s family moved to Mexico where he grew up listening to the greats of Spanish romance music as well as American rockers. He was influenced by artists like Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Christian Castro, Luis Fonsi, George Michael, Josh Groban and Ricky Martin. His deep, rich tone and vocal range allow him to follow those influencers and sing ballads with great intimacy, tenderness, and power.
In 2008, a chance audition landed him a place on Season 5 of Telefutura’s singing competition show, “Objetivo Fama”, where he shared a house and stage with 20 other aspiring singers from all over Latin America and the US. Known as “el bufon de la casa” -“the joker” – Leyo quickly became a fan favorite. Leyo continued to grow into his own as a vocalist from this experience, coached by show judges and industry experts Roberto Sueiro, Fernando Allende and Mexican singer Jimena.
His sexy smile, striking looks, infectious laugh and outgoing personality made him a regular correspondent for Sin Editar, an entertainment magazine show, solidifying him as a favorite TV personality in Puerto Rico. Leyo later returned to Los Angeles to focus on his music and education, receiving a degree in Spanish Literature. He also completed work with legendary Producer/Songwriter Rudy Perez, Billboard Music Latin Producer of the Decade, recording his ballad “Ya No Recuerdas”. He is currently working with multi-Grammy award winning producer Cory Rooney (Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige) collaborating on new music and developing his unique style.
We are so happy that Leyo is now based in Los Angeles where American fans can see him live and we talk with him on the air on MúsicaLA on Wednesday
